These are the days which have an extraordinary significance in everybody’s life. Wouldn’t this be the perfect day to express your feelings to your friend? Although this day is widely celebrated in India and the rest of the world, not many people are aware of the origin of it. The following are some details about it, which may help you learn more about this extraordinary day.

Origin of Friendship Day

The concept of friendship day was made famous by the owner of Hallmark greetings card, Joyce Hall, back in the year 1930. He had dedicated 2nd of August as the day of friends when friends all over the world would come together and celebrate it with great pomp and glory. However, before this too, there were instances of friendship day being celebrated. Some people believe that this day has been in existence since as far back as 1911. However, no concrete theory or evidence has been found to establish the logic or origin of it.

The revival of Friendship Day

In the mid-1900s the popularity of the tradition of friendship day had dwindled. Although, it is believed that this tradition was established in the western countries, yet during this period friendship day celebrations had almost become obsolete. There could have been a wide range of reasons for this, but the general tension of the Second World War and the subsequent cold war era could have played a significant role in it. However, towards the end of the century, the tradition came back to prominence. The revival was more significant in the South East Asian countries. Countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is known to celebrate this day. While some make it a point to see their friends on this day and have a gala time, others prefer to send friendship day flowers to their close friends to let them know how special they are.

Role of Internet and Social Media

Since the turn of the century, this tradition has been given a new lease of life with the advent of the internet and social media. With the help of social media lost friends are once again united. Hence, friendship day celebration online has become quite a rage. Moreover, the internet has also provided more and more natural avenues to connect with people from all over the world. The Internet allows one to order flowers online and send flowers to Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi and all the other premier cities of India. If this is not possible then just a wish through a mail or social media platforms too can make a person’s day.
